Walt Disney World FastPass+

Walt Disney World has offered FastPass+ since 2014, when the MDE app was introduced and it has become so much easier to book fastpasses.

I remember when I first visited the parks 10 years ago, getting to the park I wanted to visit that day and as soon as that park opened, running fast the the attraction I wanted, scanning my park entry ticket upon the FP booth and getting a paper ticket FP with a time of return.

Now, at either 30 days or 60 days, depending on whether you are staying on Disney property or not. You can book Fast Passes from the comfort of your own home. This next bit might sound a little complicated but I promise it is not. If you are staying off property, for example an non Disney owned resort, you can make your FastPass+ selection at the 30 day mark. Which means you can only book one day at a time 30 days ahead. However if you are staying at a Disney owned resort or in one of the new Disney Springs area resorts that include the Magical Extras, you can book 60 days in advance and up to 10 days further for you stay. So that means if you are staying on Disney property and staying 4 nights, at your 60 day mark you can make FastPass+ selections for your whole trip, if on the other hand you have booked a 2 week stay, you can only book 10 days of you stay at the 60 day mark and the other remaining days at their 60 day mark.

Each guest is allowed to prebook up to 3 fastpass choices per day, after each of them is used, you can book one, use it, book another use it etc, until all the fastpass selections have gone for the day.

Most popular fastpass choices are Pandora’s Flight of Passage in Animal Kingdom, Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucer in Hollywood Studios, Frozen Ever After and Soarin’ in EPCOT and Seven Dwarves Mine Train in Magic Kingdom.

As I have described in previous posts, the parks are tiered with their fastpasses apart from Magic Kingdom. So this means you can only have 1 fastpass each day from tier 1 and 2 from tier 2.

Here is a breakdown of each park and their tiers.

Disney has also started a ‘pay for extra’ fastpasses, select deluxe hotel rooms, concierge, club level and select cabins and bungalows, that if you are staying for 3 nights or more, for $50 extra per night of your stay you are entitled to the following,

  • Three additional FastPass+ selections per day
  • Ability to reserve these three additional FastPass+ selections in more than one theme park when a valid Park Hopper option is also purchased
  • Booking window of up to 90 days in advance for these three additional FastPass+ selections and the ability to book them at multiple top-tier attractions
  • Preferred viewing location for nighttime spectaculars, one per day, including Happily Ever After at Magic Kingdom, IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth at Epcot, Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Rivers of Light at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

All guest will need a valid park ticket or Annual Pass to qualify for the above.

With the announcement made in January that this new ‘VIP FastPass’ would be introduced. It has been met with negativity, mainly because guest believe it starts paving the way for all FastPasses to be bought and not be included with your park ticket, that no FastPass+ selections will be avaliable at the 30 day window and it would be harder for guests to score the FastPass they were after.

I have managed to get 3 on the days FastPasses for Flight Of Passage due to guests cancelling on the day. The same thing happens with dining, people cancel plans at 24 hours or less notice. So don’t dispare, it is possible at short notice to get the hard FastPasses or reservations.

What are you thoughts on FastPass+? Do you plan you FastPasses at 30/60 days? Do you plan FastPass selections on the day? Do you think the ‘VIP FastPass’ will change the way FastPass will work in the future? Let me know in the comments.
